For cross-border Shopify stores

Customs-ready HS codes and country of origin for every product.

HScout suggests the right 6-digit HS code for each product in your catalog, then adds US HTS and EU CN codes on top. You review the suggestions, approve them, and they're written to Shopify. New products stay covered automatically.

Why HS codes matter more in 2026

EU · since 1 July 2026

€3 duty per item

Parcels worth €150 or less imported into the EU from outside now pay a flat €3 customs duty per item. An item means goods sharing the same tariff classification, so 5 T-shirts cost €3, but T-shirts plus a watch cost €6. This temporary duty runs until 1 July 2028.

US · since 24 June 2026

De minimis suspended

The $800 de minimis exemption is suspended indefinitely for all shipping modes. Low-value parcels now need a formal or informal customs entry, which requires HTSUS classification and country of origin.

Shopify

Your store already uses these fields

Shopify stores an HS code and a country of origin on every product variant. Duty and import-tax estimates and customs forms rely on them. Empty or inconsistent values can mean holds, wrong duties or returned parcels.

How it works

  1. 1

    Scan

HScout reads your catalog and shows which variants are missing an HS code or country of origin.

  2. 2

    Suggest

Each product gets a suggested code with a confidence score, a plain-English reason and a link to the official tariff line.

  3. 3

    Review

Approve in bulk and fix the low-confidence ones. Country of origin always comes from your own rules or CSV; we never guess it.

  4. 4

    Write & stay covered

Approved codes go into Shopify, and new products are classified as you add them. Includes a full audit log and one-click undo.

Steps 1–4 describe the planned Shopify app. Today we offer the free snapshot (step 2 as a PDF + CSV).

What a snapshot looks like

A real excerpt from a snapshot of a Canadian basics-apparel brand, built from its public catalog of 1,307 products and 7,147 variants. The brand is anonymised and product names are shortened.

Why some items need review: whether a garment is knitted or woven (HS Chapter 61 vs 62), the exact fibre content, and the gender it's cut for all change the code, and catalog text often doesn't say. In the full product, those items go to a review queue instead of being written automatically.

You'll get a one-page PDF and a CSV with a suggested HS code for every product, usually within 2 business days.

  • We only read your public storefront catalog. No install, no login.
  • We can't see whether your codes are already set in Shopify admin, because those fields aren't public. If they are, the snapshot works as a cross-check.

FAQ

Is this customs advice?

No. HScout gives suggestions, and you approve every code. For regulated goods (food, supplements, chemicals, some cosmetics and electronics) or high-value shipments, check with a licensed customs broker or the official tariff.

Where do the codes come from?

From the Harmonized System nomenclature (2022 edition), cross-checked against official tariffs: USITC HTS (US), EU TARIC and the UK Trade Tariff.

How accurate is it?

Accuracy varies by product type. Confidence is high for well-described goods like candles, cotton T-shirts and notebooks. Garments with unclear fabric construction and mixed gift sets need a human check, and we flag them instead of guessing. We'll publish measured accuracy before the app launches.

What about country of origin?

Origin depends on where your goods were made, and only you know that. HScout lets you set it once with rules, for example "Vendor X → Portugal" or "All products → Vietnam", or upload it as a CSV. We never infer it.

Do you see my customers' data?

No. The snapshot uses only your public product listings, and the planned app needs only product data.

Is HScout affiliated with Shopify?

No. HScout is an independent product that will be submitted to the Shopify App Store.
